Step 1: Assessment
At Excel Students, we perform two types of assessments before we get started. The first type of assessment consists of identifying the needs of the student and how we can meet those needs. The second type of assessment is an online assessment that helps determine the student’s strengths and weaknesses in the subject that the student will be tutored in. With this initial academic assessment, we are able to understand how the student lines up with his or her state standards.
Our tutoring program is tailored according to the needs of the student and based on the assessment results. An Academic Director is assigned to the student who will work with the tutor to monitor the progress of the student and to ensure that the student is reaching his or her performance goals. Whether it’s to keep up, catch up, or get ahead, our expert, highly trained and qualified tutors are here to help.
Step 2: Individual Learning Plan
After analyzing the results of the assessment taken by the student in Step 1, our Academic Director puts together an Individual Learning Plan (ILP). This ILP will be tailored to the student and will consist of the following:
1. The ILP will address the student's weak areas and help them reach the grade-level they should be at.
2. The ILP will ensure that the student's strength areas are maintained and enhanced.
3. The ILP will be aligned with the student's state standards and curriculum.
4. For students that are already performing at the right grade-level, the ILP will incorporate a plan to take them to the next grade-level.
Step 3: Tutoring
Once the Individual Learning Plan (ILP) has been created for a student, the Academic Director will schedule the tutoring sessions with the appropriate tutor. The Academic Director will also work with the tutor to review the student’s ILP and put together the relevant teaching materials. In this step, the student engages with the tutor in a personalized, one-on-one tutoring session in which the student receives 100% attention from the tutor. The student always interacts with the same tutor to maintain consistency and to effectively measure progress of the student. All of our tutors have many years of teaching and tutoring experience, undergo a rigorous application, training, and examination process and are certified by Excel Students.
Step 4: Reinforce
Following the tutoring session, the tutor will assign homework, quizzes, and exams as appropriate to reinforce the topics that the student learned. This will also help the tutor to gauge the student’s understanding of the material covered since the student will be working on these assignments in a non-tutoring environment. Once the student completes the assignment, the tutor will grade it and review it with the student.
Step 5: Post-Assessment
On-going assessments will be given to the student to measure the student’s progress. These post-assessments help us determine whether the weak areas of the student is being improved upon, ensure that strength areas are maintained, or determine whether the student is making progress towards the next grade level.
Step 6: Progress Conference
Our Academic Directors will set up meetings periodically to discuss performance of the student, post-assessment results, and the Individual Learning Plan (ILP). Parent will have an opportunity to provide their own feedback to the Academic Director so that appropriate changes can be made, if necessary. The ILP will be modified based on the student’s progress and parent’s feedback to ensure that appropriate teaching materials are covered with the student.
